For reps on threshold bonus plans: paid quarterly on year-to-date attainment, nothing below a floor, capped at 100% in-year, with commission on revenue over goal at year end.
This quarter's payout
Divide year-to-date revenue by year-to-date goal. Year-to-date bonus earned = annual target × (quarters elapsed ÷ 4) × payout %. This quarter pays that, minus what you've already received. At an $80,000 target in Q2 at 75%, you've earned $30,000; after a $12,000 Q1 payment, Q2 pays $18,000.
On a plan with a 50% floor, you get $0. Crossing the floor pays half your period target at once, so the deal that takes you from 49% to 50% is usually the most valuable of the quarter.
Usually not until year end. In-year payouts often stop at 100% of target, and commission on revenue over goal is calculated after the fiscal year closes, on full-year results.
Divide your annual target by your annual goal. That's what each dollar pays below goal. If it's higher than your over-goal commission rate, overperforming pays less per dollar. An $80,000 target on an $800,000 goal pays 10¢ below goal; 8% over goal pays 8¢.
Usually only the annualized increase. A $300,000 account that signs a new $375,000 contract credits you $75,000.
On cumulative plans, the shortfall carries forward and comes out of future bonuses. You won't see another payout until your year-to-date earnings catch up.
